There comes a point in business where you realize working harder is not always the answer.

You can post more on social media. You can tweak your website. You can run ads. You can spend hours trying to figure out the perfect marketing strategy.

But sometimes the real reason your business is not growing the way you want has nothing to do with your logo, your website, or your captions.

Sometimes you are just not in the right rooms.

The rooms you put yourself in matter more than most people realize. The right room can spark an idea, open a door, lead to a referral, create a partnership, or connect you with someone who completely shifts the way you think about your business.

That is why I am such a big believer in getting around other professionals on purpose.

Not All Rooms Are Created Equal

Some rooms are a waste of time. Let us just be honest.

Some rooms are full of people who want to talk at you, not with you. Some are filled with surface-level conversations that go nowhere. Some are just business card graveyards where everyone leaves with a stack of names and no real connection.

But the right rooms are different.

The right rooms challenge you. They sharpen you. They connect you with people who understand business, value relationships, and are actively looking for ways to grow and help others grow.

Those are the rooms that can change your business.

Why Networking Events Still Matter

We live in a world where people love to act like everything can happen online. And yes, digital tools matter. Social media matters. Email marketing matters. Your website matters.

But relationships still drive business.

People do business with people they know, trust, and remember.

That is why networking events still matter so much.

When you are in the right networking environment, you are not just collecting contacts. You are building relationships with people who may:

  • send you referrals
  • introduce you to decision-makers
  • brainstorm ideas with you
  • share strategies that have worked in their businesses
  • become strategic partners
  • help you solve problems faster

Why BNI Deserves a Mention

If we are talking about the right rooms, I have to mention BNI.

BNI works because it is not random. It is built around the idea that professionals intentionally help each other grow through referrals.

Instead of hoping someone remembers what you do, BNI gives you a consistent opportunity to build relationships, educate others on how to refer you, and become more intentional about the way you network.

When you are in a room regularly with people who are serious about growth, things start to happen.

The Right Room Helps You Think Bigger

One of the most overlooked benefits of the right rooms is perspective.

When you surround yourself with other professionals you start hearing things like:

  • “Here is what worked for us.”
  • “Have you thought about partnering with this type of business?”
  • “You are undercharging.”
  • “You need a better follow-up system.”
  • “I know someone you should meet.”

Those conversations matter. They help you think differently and move faster.

Show Up Prepared

If you are networking and you make a good connection, you need an easy way to stay connected.

That is why I strongly recommend having a digital business card. It is one of the easiest ways to share your information and collect someone else’s information at the same time.

I am a big fan of Blinq for this. It makes connecting simple, fast, and professional.

If you prefer traditional cards, at the very least have a way to keep them organized. I use a business card holder like this:

Networking Is Not Just About Getting Referrals

Networking is not only about receiving referrals. It is about becoming someone who can also give referrals and make meaningful introductions.

When you become known as someone who connects people and adds value, your reputation grows.
